A Beach made of Saharan Sand

Playa de Las Teresitas is a stunning example of human engineering meets natural beauty. The man-made beach, located in the small town of San Andrés in the Canary Islands, was created in the 1970s to provide the community with a much-needed tourism boost. Originally, the area was mostly rocky with a small strip of black sand. It was divided into three sections, each with its own name: Tras la Arena, Los Moros, and the area bounded by the ravine of Las Teresas. There was also a private spa in the middle of the beach. However, the real draw for visitors was surfing. The waves off the coast of Playa de Las Teresitas were some of the best on the island.

Above the beach, which is sandwiched between two mountains, were farms and orchards producing bananas, mangoes, tomatoes, and avocados for much of the town’s income. These have now been supplanted by tourist industry development.

It became clear that black local sand from Tenerife was too expensive so they looked for alternatives. The white Sahara Desert variety ended up being more appealing to tourists and the City Council obtained a loan in 1971 with 150 thousand metric tons worth of purchases which cost around €20 million at today’s rates (approx €6 million back in 1971).
